Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
Rushing straight from one, I played Danganronpa 2 right away—the first game had such an open-ended finish, with the world being overtaken by despair, that I needed to know what happened ASAP. The first thing that stuck out to me was the extra fanservice compared to the first game. Of course, there was fanservice in the first one, but wow, they really cranked it up in this one. Usually, it doesn’t bother me, but it was definitely noticeable. Especially with characters like Mikan, who I love (Yami-Kawaii has my whole heart), but some of the moments with her, especially her falling scenes, felt a bit unnecessary. Apart from that, the character design in this game is fantastic. I adore Chiaki so much, and her arc—being revealed as an AI pretending to be Chiaki because her friends missed her so much—was absolutely heartbreaking. Monomi was also a sweetheart, and her execution with Chiaki was so sad. I was really rooting for a twist where they both survived. I also loved Fuyuhiko; he was really likable, and after the Peko trial, he really cemented himself as one of my all-time favorite characters from this series. Not to mention, I’m a total sucker for Yakuza aesthetics—thank you, Yakuza series! The music in this game was amazing; I loved how it used the soundtrack from the first game to tie the atmospheres together while still feeling different and having a tropical vibe. I actually enjoyed the gameplay less this time around. I think I preferred the simpler trial mechanics in the first game over the more complicated ones in the second. I found mechanics like Logic Dive a bit boring and just wanted them to speed up—though maybe that’s just my brainrot kicking in. I could tell they wanted to add more to differentiate it from the first game, but it didn’t feel like a satisfying addition. The ending, however, was a lot more satisfying. I loved the reveals, and giant Junko with her huge flip phone was hilarious. Of course, I also enjoyed the part where Byakuya came back!

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
Can you believe I totally missed the hype for this game back in 2020? It's insane to me, especially since I'm obsessed with visual novel games and just generally love edgy atmospheres in media (definitely a result of being obsessed with anime in the 2000s). At first, I was put off by the madness around the fandom, but I played it for the first time this year, and now I’m so sad I didn’t play it sooner! The standout thing for me is the music—the haunting, slow wind of the soundtrack creates an amazing atmosphere that never really gets old. The trial mechanics are lovely; they never grated on me, and I really appreciated the challenge of the harder difficulties. Navigating the game feels nostalgic to me, like that old Windows maze screensaver in the best way. I’m so thankful I’ve managed to avoid spoilers even after all this time, because having my favorite characters die was heartbreaking in the best way possible. I will not get over Celeste's execution—her personality being an act was such a twist, and her gothic lolita style with Vivienne Westwood jewelry? As a Vivienne Westwood collector, seeing it represented alongside J-fashion was a lovely surprise. Still salty that one of my favorite characters dies while Yasuhiro lives! (Is that controversial?) Byakuya was so interesting to me—I loved seeing him warm up to Naegi, and the fact that he doesn't lose his pride and continues to represent the Togami name even when the world has fallen into despair was so compelling. I also loved Kyoko and really related to her character, especially her family issues and love of investigating. Overall, I just wanted more, and the ending was frustratingly open-ended!
